Newcastle loan star could make Premier League bow at Aston Villa

Trinity Road Stand - Aston Villa

Facundo Ferreyra failed to feature among the substitutes for Newcastle against Manchester City but impressed in a reserve fixture this week.

Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew could turn to new loan signing Facundo Ferreyra this weekend after seeing his Magpies team draw a blank against defending Premier League champions Manchester City.

The Toon’s 2-0 loss to the Citizens marked the fifth consecutive encounter with the Sky Blues in which Newcastle have failed to score.

Emmanuel Riviere, who featured for the Magpies against City, failed to find the net at St James’ Park on Sunday in an otherwise solid performance from the hosts.

The Frenchman, who arrived from AS Monaco in a £6 million deal, could soon receive support in the final third from another new signing in the form of Ferreyra.

Arriving from Shakhtar Donetsk in a season-long loan that includes an option for the Argentine to sign permanently come the end of the season, some were sceptical as to whether the 23-year-old would be able to adapt to the demands of the Premier League.

Pardew even went as far as to suggest Ferreyra was lacking fitness and match-sharpness upon his arrival on Tyneside.

But the former Velez Sarsfield hitman went some way to silencing the doubters after impressing for the Newcastle United reserve team, scoring in a 3-3 draw with Bolton Wanderers.

Keen to get started for the Magpies first-team, this impressive midweek outing could see Ferreyra earn a spot on the Newcastle bench for Saturday’s lunch-time trip to Aston Villa.

The Villans are on a high after picking up a hard-fought 1-0 win over Stoke City last weekend, but could struggle against a Newcastle side that has beaten the Midlands club in each of their last three competitive meetings.

Pardew’s teams have enjoyed recent trips to Villa Park too, picking up wins in their previous two visits to the ground.

That said, Newcastle struggled for goals away from home at the back-end of last season, with just one scored in their final five league fixtures.

It could come down to the efforts of Riviere and perhaps Ferreyra.
