QPR linked with move for 23-year-old Arsenal player

Coquelin

Francis Coquelin has been linked with a move from Arsenal to Queens Park Rangers.

Arsenal midfielder Francis Coquelin is reportedly on Queens Park Rangers' radar this summer.

That is the claim of French newspaper L’Equipe, which suggests the 23-year-old is being targeted by a number of clubs, although Harry Redknapp’s side is the only one mentioned by name.

The report adds that some French clubs are also interested in a player whose contract expires next summer.

If Arsene Wenger wants to get a fee for him, rather than seeing him leave on a free, a switch now would make sense. However the somewhat vague report does include the caveat that Coquelin could remain at Arsenal regardless of the alleged interest.

Could it be a case of covering all bases? Quite possibly; but the Frenchman is unlikely to get much – if any – game-time at the Emirates Stadium this season and a permanent move could make sense at this point in his career.

If QPR did make a bid, the player is unlikely to command a particularly high fee, while his flexibility is such that Redknapp would have a player who not only plays in defensive midfield but also in either full-back position when required.

Coquelin spent last season on loan at Bundesliga club Freiburg, where he made 24 appearances and scored one goal.

Is it time Coquelin left Arsenal for good? Would he be a smart signing for QPR?
