Rojo in at Manchester United: Six players who could follow

Angel Di Maria

Who could follow Marcos Rojo in at Manchester United?

Manchester United have confirmed a deal has been agreed to sign Marcos Rojo, pending a medical.

The Argentine defender is unlikely to be the last player through the door at Old Trafford this transfer window, with the club's lack of depth highlighted by a poor 2-1 home defeat on opening day to Swansea City.

Here is a look at six potential players who could follow:

Daley Blind

Ajax star Daley Blind is a player Louis van Gaal knows well from his role as Holland manager. Playing as a left wing-back at the World Cup, Blind excelled in defensive midfield for Ajax last season and this is where he could shine for United. Speculation has suggested he could cost as much as £20 million, and he has said he is open to offers.

Angel di Maria

Di Maria was told by Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti that he can leave if he really wants to, if a bid of £50 million plus is received. United have been linked with putting together a £200,000 plus per week wage offer, enough to turn anybody's head. The departure of Nani on loan could suggest United are preparing to sign a winger, but whether he will solve the club's problems is another matter.

Arturo Vidal

Chilean international Arturo Vidal is the player who would best suit United's needs, a box-to-box midfielder which they have lacked for years. He has won three successive titles at Juventus and is reportedly open to a new challenge, but the Red Devils are yet to make a bid. He would cost United in the region of £45 million.

Kevin Strootman

If United cannot or decide not to sign Arturo Vidal, do not be surprised to see Louis van Gaal renew interest in Kevin Strootman. A player he trusts and knows well from his time as Dutch boss, Strootman impressed for Roma last season before a knee injury, from which he has almost recovered. Roma are very reluctant to sell, and United could have to pay over the odds to get him.

William Carvalho

United scouts were reportedly in attendance in Portugal at the weekend as Sporting Lisbon took on Academia, in full knowledge Marcos Rojo would not be playing. Regular visitors to watch William Carvalho last season, the central midfielder is still reported to be on their radar, while has interested Arsenal and Chelsea also of late. Having already done business once with Sporting this month, United will have to pay his £37m release clause if they want to sign him.

Juan Cuadrado

Fiorentina winger Juan Cuadrado has been linked to both Manchester United and Barcelona all summer long, with the Serie A side keen to get a bidding war going for his services. The Colombian is capable of playing as a wing-back in United's system, but United may be wary of paying over the odds, with his price tag inflated due to his performances at the World Cup.
