Stan Collymore questions Ander Herrera and Juan Mata purchases

Mata Martinez Spain

In the latest Manchester United transfer news, talkSPORT pundit asked his Twitter followers whether Spanish pair were good buys.

The two most expensive Manchester United acquisitions over the past 12 months - Juan Mata from Chelsea for £37.1 million and Ander Herrera two months ago from Athletic Bilbao for £29 million - may not have been wise investments as the foundations to allow these two Spaniards to play to their full abilities is not even in place yet at Old Trafford.

That is the view of Stan Collymore, who believes Luke Modric and Yohan Cabaye from Real Madrid and Newcastle United respectively, may have been more astute purchases - especially as they could have been bought for a combined fee that would have likely been half the price of the total outlay spent on Mata and Herrera - £66.1 million.

Collymore said: "Still think Herrera/Fellaini for £50 million [sic: £66.1 million] haven't and won't solve the midfield dominance issue at Manchester United. They could have had Carlos Sanchez for £4 million!"

He added: "Did say Yohan Cabaye for Manchester United last season instead of Mata but that ship sailed. If United had [Luka] Modric/Cabaye as the two holding - problem solved.

"Herrera, Mata etc are players you buy when you've sorted the physical aggression, mobility and dominance in the engine room. Have United?" Collymore asked, in conclusion.

United boss Louis van Gaal is yet to complete his transfer spending for the summer and has long been linked with Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal, however, with each transfer day that passes, the potential deal for the Chilean sensation becomes increasingly unlikely, as the Old Lady of Serie A set a deadline for the transfer that has already seemingly passed.

United have also been linked with a move for Alexandre Song on loan, Kevin Strootman from AS Roma and Ajax utility player Daley Blind.
