Tottenham in danger of missing out on ‘new Henry’ at AS Monaco

The north London club had been linked with a £15.8 million bid for Anthony Martial but could miss out on the forward with Bordeaux also interested.

Tottenham’s pursuit of 18-year-old Ligue 1 sensation Anthony Martial may have hit a major stumbling block after Bordeaux reportedly entered the race to sign the young striker.

Spurs had been linked with an £15.8 million bid for the Frenchman, who has impressed since moving to AS Monaco from Lyon as a teenager in a €5 million deal.

Martial currently has two years left on his contract with the Principality club but with the presence of big-name strikers like Radamel Falcao and Dimitar Berbatov blocking his route to the first team, the youngster could be open to a move away from the club.

Mauricio Pochettino is keen to recruit another forward to the White Hart Lane fold, as Tottenham go in pursuit of a top four finish.

They could soon find their prospective bid for Martial hijacked, however, with Ligue 1 side Bordeaux reportedly lining up a move for the France under-21 international.

Speaking in an interview with Canal Plus, the manager of the French league side, former Bayern Munich defender Willy Sagnol, revealed the club’s interest in Martial.

"He lacks a bit of experience, but he's a player I think about a lot," he told the news station.

The comments came after the 18-year-old was excluded from the Monaco squad that slumped to a 4-1 loss to Bordeaux at the weekend, fuelling further speculation he could be set for an imminent exit.

Martial is one of a series of forwards being linked with a move to Tottenham, with Spurs also believed to be looking at former Chelsea forward Samuel Eto’o and AS Roma striker Mattia Destro.

The north London side could yet face Premier League competition for the latter of these two targets, following reports that Jose Mourinho had turned his attention to the Italian.

But with the Romans thought to be keen on Roberto Soldado, the Lilywhites may still hold the advantage.
