Manchester United need to strengthen spine, says former defender

Danny Higginbotham feels his old club definitely need to add more players in the remaining 10 days of the transfer window.

United's frail squad has already been exposed this season with the Red Devils rocked by injuries to 10 senior players, and losing their opening game of the season 2-1 at home to Swansea City.

And if they are going to compete with their Premier League rivals this season, Danny Higginbotham believes that they need to significantly strengthen the squad before the transfer window shuts at the end of the month.

The United academy graduate told talkSPORT: “They need to improve in terms of getting players into the squad. You have to strengthen your spine constantly.

“If you look at Chelsea, they’ve signed Costa and Fàbregas. Man City have signed Fernando and Mangala. Liverpool have done it with Lovren and Lallana. So United definitely need to sign some more players."

United have signed Ander Herrera, Luke Shaw and Marcos Rojo so far this summer taking their spending to around £70 million, but it hasn't really been anything like the summer many fans were anticipating.

After finishing a dismal seventh last season, many fans expected new manager Louis van Gaal to completely  overhaul the squad this summer, but it just hasn't happened. Many of the club's supposed targets i.e. Cesc Fabregas and Toni Kroos have gone elsewhere, whilst little to no movement has been officially made for other linked players such as Angel Di Maria and Arturo Vidal.

Higginbotham goes on to suggest that Van Gaal will require time to be successful, and says United's players need to start making opponents fear playing at Old Trafford, rather than fearing it themselves.

"Van Gaal has proved he’s a very successful manager but people thought he would come in with a magic wand to right all the wrongs from last season, but it doesn’t happen.

“If you look at Saturday against Swansea, within the players there is a fear factor of playing at Old Trafford. Previously there was a fear factor from visiting teams, but now the players are nervous and they need to get that out of their system. There’s no hiding place at Old Trafford.”

Which players to you think United need to strengthen the squad's spine?
