Arsenal legend issues Ajax ultimatum to Tottenham summer target

Ajax

Ajax director of football Marc Overmars has called on former Chelsea striker Samuel Eto’o to decide whether he wants to sign with the Eredivisie side.

Samuel Eto’o must decide whether he wants to sign for reigning Eredivisie champions Ajax in the next 24 hours or seek out an alternative move, with Tottenham Hotspur among those keen to recruit the Cameroon international.

That is according to Marc Overmars, director of football at the Amsterdam club, who issued the ultimatum to the former Barcelona and Inter Milan star after talks with the 33-year-old appeared to stall.

According to Dutch news provider De Telegraaf, the former African Footballer of The Year must decide in the next 24 hours whether he is keen on moving to Holland.

While recently linked with a move to Ajax, Eto’o had previously been thought to be keen on remaining in England, having enjoyed a solid season with Chelsea.

The Cameroonian star scored 12 goals in 34 games for the Blues and has been linked with several clubs in the Premier League over the past few weeks.

Tottenham and Liverpool are both thought to be weighing up a move for the striker, who is available on a free but will command substantial wages.

The Reds are keen to recruit another forward to ease some of the pressure on Daniel Sturridge, following the departure of Luis Suarez to Barcelona.

Spurs, meanwhile, are desperately short of quality in the final third with Emmanuel Adebayor recovering from malaria and Roberto Soldado struggling for goals and linked with a move away from White Hart Lane.

Tottenham could be the preferred destination for Eto’o, with the 33-year-old keen to remain in London, having come close to completing a move to West Ham only for the deal to reportedly stall over wage demands.

With Ajax seeking an answer imminently, we will soon find out how keen the Cameroon star is on staying in England.
