Arsenal have received bad news regarding the fitness of Mikel Arteta, report The Mirror, with the Spaniard ruled out for 'at least two weeks'.
He was withdrawn in the second half against Besiktas with an ankle problem, and will certainly miss ties against Everton this weekend and the return leg against the Turks in next week's Champions League qualifier.
Here are three key questions in reaction to the new club captain's spell on the sidelines:
Will this force the Gunners to spend?
With Mikel Arteta now out, and Aaron Ramsey suspended next week, the club's midfield strength is being tested. If not this, then one more injury could be a tipping point. There is under a fortnight until the transfer window closes, and if the club lose either game against Everton or Besiktas, their need to buy a midfielder will only be highlighted. William Carvalho and Sami Khedira have been linked, and a failure to make a new addition while they can could come back to haunt them later in the season.
Can Abou Diaby get fit?
This is a question which has haunted the club for far too long, and the Frenchman's status is still unclear. The midfielder featured twice in pre-season but has not made the bench in any competitive game and did not travel to Turkey. There would be no time like the present for the 28-year-old to return, but fans should not hold their breath.
Can Jack Wilshere step up?
Arsene Wenger talked up Jack Wilshere's potential to play in defensive midfield during pre-season, and the coming week presents a possible chance to test this. Wenger could throw Calum Chambers into the position, but for Wilshere it provides a chance to cement a position in the side, with Mesut Ozil due to return to fill the attacking midfield role.
Here's how fans reacted to the news:
Arteta only out for 2 weeks fffs. Definitely not signing a DM then battle for 4th place again #AFC— THEO WALCÖTT ♥ (@Go0ner_) August 20, 2014
As expected: Arteta injury not looking good, reportedly set to miss the Everton clash. Chambers at CM/CDM anyone? I would. #AFC— Arsenal First (@afc_first) August 20, 2014
Even if Arteta is only out for two weeks, what happens if he does injured long-term in the future? Arsenal have to sign a midfielder.— Brendan (@AFC_93) August 20, 2014
Maybe Arteta getting injured may force Wenger to get another DM— Mr Arsenal (@15suhayb) August 20, 2014
