Destro masterclass saves Roma, could encourage Tottenham

Alleged Tottenham target Mattia Destro scored two goals in 21 minutes to help Roma fight back from 3-1 down in a home friendly against Fenerbahce.

Roma struggled against Turkish side Fenerbahce last night and only a late fightback allowed them to grab a 3-3 draw.

Much is expected of the capital club this season, but Rudi Garcia's side looked laboured for much of last night's friendly at the Stadio Olimpico.

A crowd over just over 40,000 attended to welcome the new Roma squad, but it was old face Francesco Totti who opened the scoring from the penalty spot after Raul Meireles brought down Gervinho.

Defender Mehdi Benatia, whose future has been the subject of intense debate, was greeted warmly by fans, but Garcia suffered a blow with an injury to Leandro Castan.

Fenerbahce levelled with an excellent Bruno Alves free-kick, but Roma goalkeeper Morgan De Sanctis will feel he could've done much more to save it.

And the visitors took control as Davide Astori brought down Alper Potuk in the box and Dirk Kuyt converted the penalty.

When Roma midfielder Adem Ljajic gave up possession, substitute goalkeeper Lukasz Skorupski was able to deny Emmanuel Emenike but Moussa Sow followed up to make it 3-1.

But Roma's saviour was Mattia Destro, who showed exactly why Tottenham are said to be following him.

Juan Iturbe and Urby Emanuelson exchanged passes and released Destro, who replaced Totti on 69 minutes, and he fired home on 80 minutes.

Five minutes later with time running out, Destro levelled the game when he jumped to convert a corner from Iturbe.

Roma nearly won it at the death through Alessandro Florenzi, but he didn't quite get enough behind it after Salih Ucan found him with a pinpoint ball.

It is still being suggested that Roma may need to sell off an asset to balance the books and Destro has put himself in the shop window once again.
