Former Chelsea striker Tony Cascarino believes Cesc Fabregas showed in Monday’s Premier League opener against Burnley why he’ll prove the best buy of the summer.
Having originally left Arsenal for Barcelona in August 2011, many were eager to see whether the ex-Gunners captain’s £30 million return to England would see him rediscover the form he showcased during his eight seasons at the Emirates, following a somewhat frustrating spell in his homeland.
Duly delivering in the 3-1 win with 89 completed passes and two assists, the 27-year-old’s performance even moved Jose Mourinho to label him “maestro”, and Cascarino thinks that there’s much more to come this season.
‘If I had to pick a player [to star this season], I said before the season started that the one who would make a big splash for me was Fabregas,’ he told Sky Sports News HQ.
‘We saw what he was at Arsenal but he had an indifferent time in and out of the side at Barcelona, so we were wondering what he’d be like for Chelsea, but I think we got a pretty dramatic answer last night.
‘We’re going to find out that he’s going to be a good, good player for them.’
Fabregas’s next opportunity to impress in a Blue shirt will come on Saturday against another set of top-flight newcomers in Leicester City, where he’ll be looking to further demonstrate that all the recent plaudits are indeed warranted.
