Falcao's Monaco teammate a more important signing for Liverpool

Geoffrey Kondogbia a more important player if Liverpool want to dominate midfield.

Gary Neville was predictably quick to write off Liverpool's title chances on Monday night, claiming Chelsea and Manchester City are superior.

His reasoning was the Reds lack a player with power to match the finesse of their midfield, as opposed to Nemanja Matic and Yaya Toure at their two rivals.

Liverpool have been linked with signing striker Radamel Falcao from Monaco, but his teammate Geoffrey Kondogbia could be a far better solution instead.

Kondogbia, 21, is a full French international who has represented his country from under-16 at every age upwards, part of the under-20 World Cup winning side last summer.

Paul Pogba's midfield partner at the tournament, Kondogbia clinched a move from Sevilla to Monaco, but made only 16 starts in his debut season in Ligue 1, which could suggest he may be available at the right price.

That cost would be certainly cheaper than Falcao, and his defensive midfield prowess would be a more immediate answer to what Liverpool need right now, and an upgrade on Lucas Leiva.

Kondogbia is a player full of potential, and has a realistic chance of being one of the world's best in his position. His presence could allow Liverpool's attacking talent to flourish and add greater balance to their side.

Neville had told SkySports: "I’m not writing Arsenal and Liverpool off on the first day of the season, but I’m not sure how they can win it.

“You look at champions and they have to fight when they have to fight. Chelsea have got a back four that’s massive and they’ve got Nemanja Matic and Diego Costa. Man City are the only side that can match them for size and power."
