No Chelsea offer for £35m midfield target William Carvalho

Sporting Lisbon

Reports in Portugal differ from those here, suggesting that no interest has been registered by Chelsea for William Carvalho.

Reports this week have suggested that one of the Premier League's favourite rumour mill names has gained himself another interested party.

Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho has been linked with Manchester United and Arsenal most heavily this summer but new suitors have seemingly emerged in the form of title challenging Chelsea. It has been reported this week that Chelsea are willing to spend £35 million on the midfield maestro this summer.

The Portuguese international, who has a current release clause of £37 million, is seen as the perfect rotation option with Nemanja Matic - however there are of course doubts over the move.

First of all, Matic looks like he doesn't need a rotating back-up, and secondly Chelsea are already over their limit on foreign players. Unless Carvalho has a grandad from Croxteth we don't know about - it seems unlikely.

And now a source from the club has told major Portuguese daily A Bola that there has been zero contact from Chelsea with Sporting Lisbon for the services of their marquee player.

The report states:

"Reports from England link Chelsea with an offer of 35 million pounds, about 44 million EUR, which will be in the offing from Stamford Bridge for the signature of the Portuguese international. Nevertheless, Sporting Lisbon has not reached any proposal to sell the number 14."

Their source informs them their is no 'head or tail' to the apparent deal, suggesting it is not even in the spectrum of possibility this summer.

Good news for United and Arsenal if they remain keen.
