Seven areas Chambers was better than Koscielny against Besiktas

Calum Chambers looked the best of Arsenal's defenders as the Gunners drew 0-0 at Besiktas in the Champions League play-offs last night.

Calum Chambers is starting to look like a real bargain at £16 million for Arsenal after a superb performance in the Champions League play-off game against Besiktas.

Chambers could easily have been rattled by the intimidating atmosphere in Turkey but he produced one of the best performances of his career making his central defensive partner Laurent Koscileny look like the younger deputy.

Chambers outperformed Koscileny in a staggering seven areas based on the stats from last night, which suggest that Arsene Wenger has signed a very special player ahead of a very long season.

Chambers’ basic passing and touch stats were impressive as he had 11 more touches of the ball than Koscileny last night and played one more pass with more attempted long balls over the course of the game.

What that tells us is that he has an eagerness to be involved and the higher number of touches suggests that he was getting into better positions than the Frenchman to give his Arsenal teammates an outlet during the game.

Aerially he was also better than Koscileny with more aerial duels won, making it difficult for Besiktas to hit Arsenal over the top once Arsene Wenger’s side got the ball down and were able to control possession.

The stats also suggest that Chambers read the game more effectively than Koscielny with twice as many blocks and interceptions during the game.

That shows us that the way Chambers reads a game under pressure is as good as Koscielny, who is widely respected as a more established and more experienced defender.

However, it wasn’t all about fancy interceptions and slick tackles because Chambers had a 100% success rate with his effective clearances with nine from nine compared to three from three for Koscielny.

It’s important to point out that Koscielny was carrying an Achilles problem into the game last night and that he has been consistent alongside Per Mertesacker for a long time, but Chambers looks a solid investment at £16 million and he could be worth a lot more in a few years time.

What did you make of Chambers' performance last night?
