We tried to sign star from Chelsea, we were laughed at, confesses Bundesliga coach

De Bruyne Essien

Borussia Moenchengladbach made a failed attempt to sign Kevin de Bruyne earlier this year before the Belgian switch to Wolfsburg.

A lack of patience from the player, pressure from his international boss, and not enough faith from Jose Mourinho led to Kevin de Bruyne's abrupt exit from Chelsea earlier this year.

The 23-year-old landed up signing with Wolfsburg, having made only six senior appearances for Chelsea since signing, just two being starts.

He scored three times and provided six assists in 16 games in the Bundesliga at the end of last season, form which showed why they were not the only club who attempted to bring him in.

Borussia Moenchengladbach's coach, Lucien Favre, has admitted his side attempted to sign the star - who cost Wolfsburg a staggering £17.5 million.

Unfortunately they were unable to get anywhere near matching this, as Favre revealed to German newspaper the Rheinische Post:

"It is almost impossible for us to compete with other clubs, we were interested in signing to Kevin de Bruyne. It was (our offer) a loan of six months.

"His advisor laughed at our offer. No chance. "

De Bruyne went onto impress at the World Cup, and it's likely that even if a loan had been accepted, Moenchengladbach would not have had the funds to sign the attacking midfielder.

Instead they have got lucky with another enquiry. They received a better response from the representatives of Thorgan Hazard, who signed a season long loan deal with the club in July.

Scorer on his debut in pre-season after just a minute of action, it could be fascinating to see how the young Belgian performs against his more senior compatriot.

Who will have the better season? De Bruyne or Thorgan Hazard?
