Chelsea playmaker admits what he must add to his game this season

Willian

Chelsea playmaker Willian says that he needs to score more goals if he is to play a key role at Stamford Bridge this season.

The Brazilian international, 26, was the subject of intense transfer speculation last summer. First, it appeared the former Shakhtar Donetsk star would be leaving Anzhi Makhachkala for Liverpool, only for Tottenham to swoop in to try and make him Gareth Bale's replacement at White Hart Lane. Then, in another twist, Chelsea hijacked the big and took him to Stamford Bridge, gazumping two of their biggest Premier League rivals.

Initially, pundits were shocked that Chelsea had forked out around £32m for the Brazilian given that Jose Mourinho already had Oscar, Eden Hazard, Andre Schurrle and Juan Mata at his disposal. However, his excellent displays both in attack and defence meant he won Mourinho's heart, and he ultimately supplanted Mata in the team, resulting in the Spaniard's sale to Manchester United.

His performances earned him a spot in Luiz Felipe Scolari's Brazil squad for the World Cup this summer despite having rarely featured previously, but that's not to say that his season went without criticism. Having hit just four goals and four assists from the right of Chelsea's attacking midfield trident, Willian was accused of not being productive enough in the final third, despite his high energy play.

Now, having lost his place in the team to Schurrle - who scored against Burnley in the Blues' opening game of the season - Willian says he knows that he must add more of a goalscoring threat to his game having struggled to find the back of the net in his first season at Stamford Bridge.

"I think I have to score more goals, to play better and just be better," he said. "Last season I did good, not bad, but I want more."

Should Willian do just that and add more goals to his game, then Mourinho really will be spoilt for choice, with Oscar, Hazard, Schurrle, Willian and Mohamed Salah all vying for just three spots in his team.
