£14m Liverpool star 'waits and hopes' for Inter move - report

Fabio Borini

Reports in Italy suggest that Sunderland target Fabio Borini may be holding out for a move to Inter with his future up in the air.

Despite Liverpool’s acceptance of a £14 million bid for Fabio Borini from Sunderland over a month ago, the striker remains a Red.

The Italian hasn't hidden his desire to prove himself at Anfield after a disappointing maiden campaign on Merseyside and successful season on loan at the Stadium of Light.

It’s no secret why the Black Cats want Borini permanently. He was instrumental in securing Premier League survival and taking the club to the League Cup final last term.

Likewise, there’s a reason Borini became a fan favourite on Wearside. His game is predicated on effort and sacrifice for the cause - but at the same time he has personal ambitions.

That ambition is what looks to be keeping the 23-year-old at Liverpool for the time being. With Champions League football on the docket and high-calibre squad there, he’s reluctant to accept the proposed move to Sunderland.

According to Calcio Mercato, Borini currently 'waits and hopes' for a return to Italy if he is to leave the Reds. Specifically with Inter, who have found Premier League talents Stevan Jovetic, Erik Lamela and Javier Hernandez difficult to capture.

At San Siro the Bentivoglio native wouldn’t be graced with Champions League football, but would be given the chance to feature in continental action in the Europa League.

Furthermore, he’d join a squad that has improved via the transfer market this summer and is expected to challenge for a coveted spot in the top three in Serie A.

Gus Poyet is reportedly losing patience with Borini, seeing the striker’s unwillingness to give the green light to a Sunderland switch as a sign to look elsewhere with deadline day approaching.

Should Borini indeed be holding out for Inter, the question is whether the Nerazzurri could satisfy Liverpool’s demands to sell him on.

Inter simply don’t have £14 million to splash out on him; Sunderland’s offer of that size having presented the Reds with an ideal scenario.

For now, Borini’s future continues to hang in the balance. The only certainty is that where he’ll be playing his football this campaign will become clear in less than two weeks’ time.

Where will Borini be playing his football this season?
