News, views and rumours relating to Manchester United in the past 24 hours.

In team news, Manchester United striker Robin van Persie will return this Sunday against Sunderland in the Premier League after being passed as fit, following his exclusion from the squad that lost to Swansea last weekend.

United legend Paul Scholes admits he is ‘scared’ about the club’s future, suggesting United could go the same way as Liverpool did in the 1990s. The coach as asserted the club needs to buy five major signings this summer to ‘arrest their decline’.

““The sad, and worrying, aspect of it all, after watching Manchester City and Chelsea over the first three days of the season, is that United are not on that level. They may not even be on the same level as Arsenal and Liverpool, who I think are the next grade down. United must make some signings in the last two weeks of the transfer window,” he stated.

In transfer news, Manchester United have completed the signing of Marcos Rojo for £16 million from Sporting Lisbon. The Argentine centre back has signed a five-year deal with the Red Devils and is ‘keen’ to learn under Louis van Gaal.

“It is such an honour to say that I now play for Manchester United,” Rojo said. “The Premier League is the most exciting league in the world and to have the chance to play in it for the world’s biggest club is a dream for me.

“I am young and am very keen to continue to learn the game, so playing for such an experienced technical coach as Louis van Gaal is a fantastic opportunity for me. I have joined United to work hard with my team-mates to win trophies and I know that the manager shares that ambition.”

Meanwhile, The Telegraph reports that United target Angel Di Maria has handed in a transfer request at Real Madrid, putting the Red Devils ‘on alert’ over a potential deal for the Argentine attacker.

Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti revealed that Angel Di Maria rejected a contract offer from Real Madrid and specifically asked to leave the Spanish capital:

"He asked to leave, he didn’t accept the proposal for the renewal of the contract."

However, Juventus are reportedly ‘confident’ Arturo Vidal will remain at the club despite long and protracted negotiations with United over the Chile midfielder’s prospective move to Old Trafford.

"All the requirements are there for Vidal not to leave before the end of the transfer market," Juve general director Giuseppe Marotta told Gazzetta dello Sport.

"The contract extension he signed has made more solid the marriage between Juve and Vidal.”

"Vidal has always said he wanted to stay here and we are more than happy to keep him." He added.

United are linked by the Guardian with a move to sign Xabi Alonso but the speculation appears to be just rumours at present.
