LA Galaxy's Robbie Keane making MLS MVP push

Robbie Keane

Ex-Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool striker Robbie Keane is currently in fine form for the LA Galaxy, and looks to be among the leading contenders for the 2014 MLS MVP award.

After just missing out on the 2013 MLS MVP award to the Chicago Fire’s Mike Magee, Robbie Keane is making another serious bid for the crown this season.

The LA Galaxy forward has played a crucial role in keeping his side in playoff contention in 2014, with 13 goals and nine assists in 21 games so far, and last night’s starring performance against the Colorado Rapids was further evidence of his importance.

With the club 3-1 down on the road after 45 minutes, their lone goal coming from the Irishman, Keane and fellow forward Landon Donovan helped orchestrate a stunning comeback to seal a 4-3 win, with his assist setting up his teammate for the dramatic late-winner.

Having netted 47 times in 76 regular season appearances since arriving in LA from Tottenham Hotspur in August 2011, Keane’s current form should come as no surprise, even as he continues to get up there in age.

Previously helping the Galaxy to successive MLS Cup wins in 2011 and 2012, the 34-year-old club captain is now looking to guide Bruce Arena’s side to a third title in four seasons, in a feat which would see his reputation as one of the league’s greatest ever imports further enhanced.

While MLS legend Donovan is set to steal most of the headlines during the final stretch of the season, after announcing earlier this month that he’ll retire at the end of 2014, there’s no doubt that the ever-consistent Keane remains the team’s most irreplaceable piece for their post-season push.

Those back in England might have forgotten what a star goalscorer the former Spurs and Liverpool marksman was in his Premier League prime, but a multi-year contract extension signed in May means fans across the pond will get to appreciate his MVP-calibre outings for a few more campaigns to come.
