Spurs player ratings from AEL Limassol win: Lamela steals show from bench, Paulinho struggles

Tottenham Warm Up

Tottenham battled back from an early goal to win 2-1 in Cyprus, with Roberto Soldado and Harry Kane finding the net in the Europa League playoff first leg.

Hugo Lloris 7/10 - The Frenchman was captain for the night, and though he could do nothing about the goal from Sardinero, he did make another couple of smart stops.

Kyle Naughton 6/10 - Fresh from his controversial red card against West Ham in Saturday, Naughton was part of a defence that had its nervy moments in the first half. Improved as the game went on.

Eric Dier 6.5/10 - The hero from Upton Park, Dier again looked confident and strong, this time back in his favoured position in the heart of defence.

Jan Vertonghen 6/10 - Vertonghen made his first appearance of the season in the Europa League game, and looked a little short of match fitness initially. Dier was arguably the stronger of the two in the middle of the defence.

Ben Davies 5.5/10 - Though he looked good when coming forward, Davies was weak defensively on his debut, letting his man get past him for the AEL goal, and unable to stop attackers getting shots off on another couple of occasions.

Nabil Benetaleb 6.5/10 - Did well in the middle of the park, where he was afforded time on the ball to spread passes around. Has a good engine, and did a lot of legwork for the Londoners.

Lewis Holtby 6/10 - The German did ok in central midfield, though isn't showcasing the impressive preseason form he had less than a month ago. Looked a little leggy. Booked.

Paulinho 5/10 - Paulinho has to do better than this performance. Failed to exert his authority on the game whatsoever, and also lost the ball in the lead up the AEL goal. Will be disappointed, though it should be kept in mind that this was his first game back. Spurs moved the ball around much better once Chadli and Dembele came on.

Andros Townsend 5.5/10 - Townsend was one of the victims of Tottenham struggling to breach the AEL defence. Despite starting well, as the game went on and the Cypriot defence remained resolute, the England winger was once again guilty of trying to do everything himself. A shame because several times he beat a man, only for two other opponents to meet him.

Harry Kane 7.5/10 - A constant attacking threat for Spurs, the only player that looked on form throughout the 90 minutes. Scored a smashing effort with 10 minutes left to put Spurs in the lead, and had several other threatening moments, notably when he forced goalkeeper Karim Fegrouch into a super save onto the bar just before Soldado's goal.

Roberto Soldado 6.5/10 - Just sneaks that half point after his superb volley from Lamela's pass. Struggled before that, but if he misses a couple of chances, and then scores a quality goal in his next few games, no one will mind - hopefully this will get that belief going again. Booked.

Substitutions:

Nacer Chadli (Paulinho 58') 6/10 - The Belgian winger came on with just over 30 minutes left, and played his part in unsettling the AEL defence with his pace and skill. Great work down the left to set Lamela up for a late chance.

Mousa Dembele (Holtby 65') 6.5/10 - The former Fulham man provided that little bit of strength and class on the ball that Spurs were missing in the first half. Could be in line for a start against QPR after his decent showing.

Erik Lamela (Townsend 71') MOTM 8/10 - Tottenham's record signing showed just why he commanded such a transfer fee, turning the game on its head as soon as he came onto the field. Playing a part in both goals, the first an outstanding cross field ball and the second a pass that drew in the AEL defender as Kane ran onto it, Lamela managed to scare the lives out of the AEL defence whenever he picked up the ball. He also had two shots of his own that nearly found the net as well, the second of which came after a great dribble past flailing defenders. Expect him to explode into life in the Premier League sometime soon.
