Stan Collymore picks Arsenal man as surprise long-term England captain

Wilshere 2

Jack Wilshere should be given the armband, according to renowned radio presenter Stan Collymore.

During an impromptu Q&A held on his popular social media channel, radio presenter and former forward Stan Collymore informed his 220,000+ Twitter followers that for the long-term England captaincy, manager Roy Hodgson should look no further than an Arsenal academy graduate.

Steven Gerrard wore the armband for a two-year period, succeeding John Terry. Hodgson, though, is tasked with finding a new captain after the Liverpool skipper recently announced his international retirement so that he can focus more fully on club-level football.

Collymore believes Jack Wilshere is a suitable candidate to join other greats such as David Beckham, Alan Shearer, Bryan Robson and Bobby Moore.

"Wilshere [should be long-term captain]," he said. "I think he needs that love and responsibility now."

Recently, The Express claimed that Wayne Rooney will be named as the next England captain "in order to boost ticket sales at Wembley Stadium".

Rooney has already been given the captaincy at Old Trafford and the FA could follow suit by confirming him as the leader of the next generation.
