Wenger backs Arsenal's Calum Chambers to handle Romelu Lukaku

Chambers, Wilshere, Szczesny celebrate

The Gunners boss believes the 19-year-old defender can deal with one ex-Chelsea striker, as he's just come back from dealing with another in Turkey.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has backed young defender Calum Chambers to handle Romelu Lukaku on Saturday.

The Gunners will likely still be without Per Mertesacker when they travel to Goodison Park to face Everton in the Premier League, meaning Chambers will have to deputise at centre-back once more.

But Wenger is not worried about the 19-year-old's ability to deal with the man Everton signed for £28 million this summer: Lukaku.

"It is a big test yes but it was a big test against Demba Ba on Tuesday night who was strong in the Premier League and he managed to do that very well," Wenger told reporters.

Meanwhile, the Frenchman also discussed the possibility that Chambers could become a leading England international.

Wenger believes the Arsenal defender has the talent required to represent his country - but has warned that it is too soon to get carried away.

"I share completely your assessment on Calum Chambers, he has done extremely well but I think as well in England you have to be a bit more patient," the 64-year-old continued.

"He has played three games and I think it is important for the development of the players that it doesn't go too fast, not so much on the football front but psychologically as well."

After their trip to Everton, the north London side will host Besiktas in the second leg of their Champions League play-off. The first leg ended in a 0-0 draw.

Is Chambers too young for England?
