Arsenal's £16 million signing must do this, says BBC pundit

Robbie Savage says that Calum Chambers must ensure he stays in Arsenal's starting line-up after an impressive start to life at the club.

Robbie Savage has revealed that he has been impressed by the start Calum Chambers has made to his Arsenal career.

The former Welsh international footballer, who has become a pundit for the BBC since retiring, says that Chambers has made a positive beginning to life at the Emirates and he now needs to ensure that he stays in Arsene Wenger’s starting line-up.

In a Q&A session to celebrate Match of the Day’s 50th anniversary on Twitter, Savage said: “He's done very well & taken his chance. It's early days but what he's got to do is stay in the team at centre-half.”

Chambers joined Arsenal from Southampton this summer in a £16 million move and he has already been singled out for praise by almost everyone around the club.

The 19-year-old defender has established himself as one of the finest English prospects around, after an impressive season down on the south-coast last year, and his burgeoning reputation has only increased since a switch to the capital.

The England youth international was expected to be brought in at back-up, but he has been firmly in Wenger’s starting plans so far this season and has excelled during his first few appearances for his new club.

Even so, retaining his position at the heart of the club’s defence will be tough. Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny made one of the best defensive partnerships in England’s top flight last season and it seems that breaking up their combination will be a tough ask.

Chambers has entered an Arsenal side expected to do well and he is yet to lose in his new side’s colours.

That said, as a collective group, the Gunners know that they will have to improve on their early season performances if they are to live up to their heightened expectations this year.

Wenger’s team could only pick up a draw against Besiktas on Tuesday night, in Champions League qualification, and narrowly squeezed past Crystal Palace on the opening day of the Premier League campaign.

They take on Everton tomorrow knowing that a far better performance will be required but, individually, Chambers will simply be hoping to continue showing the form he has so far and continue to keep himself firmly in starting contention.

Should Chambers be a permanent starter for Arsenal this season?
