Galatasaray chief held Lukas Podolski talks – but not with Arsenal

Galatasaray president Unal Aysal has revealed that he discussed with his coach Cesare Prandelli the prospect of signing Lukas Podolski from Arsenal.

Until last month, Lukas Podolski seemed set to remain at Arsenal for the 2014-15 campaign. But now it does not appear that certain.

The Germany international joined the Gunners from Koln in the summer of 2012 and had a good 2012-13 season.

However, the 29-year-old forward lost his spot in the starting line-up last season, and despite winning the 2014 World Cup in Brazil earlier this summer, he is unlikely to be a regular in Arsene Wenger’s side this term.

This has led to reports suggesting that Turkish giants Galatasaray are keen on the Arsenal star and have held talks with the North London outfit's officials.

However, the club’s president, Unal Aysal, has said that they are not going to make a move for the former Bayern Munich forward.

Aysal, though, has revealed that he did speak to new Galatasaray coach Cesare Prandelli about recruiting Podolski.

‘I asked Cesare Prandelli if we should target Lukas Podolski’, Goal.com quotes him as saying. ‘Prandelli told us that Podolski would be a luxury transfer and that he isn't required. As a result we didn't pursue the matter further’.

Podolski may have shown potential and promise when he was young, but these days he is largely a squad player for both Arsenal and Germany.

True, the German has earned 116 caps for his country and is a valued member of the team, but he just does not have enough to make himself a regular in Wenger’s side week in and week out if all his attack-minded teammates are fit.

This season Podolski will struggle to feature regularly for the Gunners, but he is not a bad option to bring off the bench.

Perhaps joining Galatasaray would not be a bad move for Poldolski and Arsenal, but as it stands, the Turkish club are not interested in him.

Will Arsenal miss Lukas Podolski if he leaves this summer?
