Manchester United youngster Michael Keane says that Ryan Giggs played an important role in the academy players’ first-team chances this season.

Manchester United defender Michael Keane has credited the club’s assistant manager Ryan Giggs for the promotion of young players in the team this season.

Tyler Blackett and Jesse Lingard made their Premier League debuts for the Red Devils against Swansea City at Old Trafford last Saturday.

Keane is also likely to make his top-flight debut sooner rather than later, and although he thanks manager Louis van Gaal for his faith in the club’s academy players, he believes that Giggs was crucial as well.

‘Yeah, I don't think the manager has any problems throwing young players into big games’, the 21-year-old told the club’s official website. ‘He showed that on tour and in the first Premier League game...

'It has been good because Ryan [Giggs] obviously knows what all of the young players are like from the last couple of years and he knows our histories.

‘He has obviously told the manager about us and he talks to us a lot in training, which is a massive help. It has been really good working with Ryan’.

Giggs has been at United since 1987 and was the interim-manager of the 20-time English champions for their final four Premier League matches last season following the dismissal of David Moyes.

The former Wales international winger retired from playing thereafter and took up the role of assistant manager after Van Gaal was appointed Moyes’s permanent successor.

It is clear that the 40-year-old has been advising Van Gaal on which academy graduates to promote to the first team.

Although against Swansea at Old Trafford, the inclusion of Blackett and Lingard in a 3-5-2 system did not pay dividends, in the future these are the players who could well take United back to the pinnacle of English football.

Does Michael Keane deserve to make his Premier League debut soon?
