Jose Mourinho Chelsea

On the 23rd August 2013 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United.

Let's cast our eyes back to this exact day, the 23rd August 2014, but a year earlier.

What were the main tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from the 23rd August 2013…

Pearls of wisdom

The war of words between Tottenham and Chelsea kicked into gear after Chelsea stole in and signed Willian from Anzhi Makhachkala, just a couple of days after the Brazilian international had his medical at Tottenham.

Roman Abramovich used his personal connections with the club in order to facilitate a move - which Tottenham were believed to be furious at. They felt Chelsea did not particularly want Willian, but rather signed him simply so they couldn't. The fact the club already had an abundance of player's in his position also leant credence to that theory.

But Mourinho countered, saying Chelsea have always admired Willian and that in the future "the best thing to do is have the medical in secret."

Meow.

A Mata of time

A year ago today and reports were stemming from Chelsea and Manchester United that suggested the latter were keen on a deal to sign Juan Mata.

The Spaniard was not believed to be a part of Mourinho's plans, and it was ESPN who were reporting the interest.

It came amid Chelsea interest in a United player - Wayne Rooney.

No deal happened in the summer, but when the January window opened the rumours returned and United did sign their man on the 24th January for £37.1 million.

Arsenal desire

Arsenal were having a bad summer in the transfer market - with deals for Gonzalo Higuain, Luiz Gustavo and Luis Suarez all collapsing.

But Wenger stated that players did want to join the club:
