Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a lot of players this summer, but few have generated as many column-inches as Netherlands international Memphis Depay.
The 20-year-old winger impressed at the World Cup and was soon being linked with a whole host of clubs. But the rumours of an imminent move to White Hart Lane persisted more than most.
The suggestion was that Tottenham were about to get an exciting young replacement for Gareth Bale 12 months after the Welshman's departure. But those hopes were extinguished on Friday, when PSV Eindhoven announced that they had agreed a new contract with the player.
Spurs fans will have been disappointed rather than distraught. After all, Erik Lamela is suggesting he is about to come good and things are looking up at Spurs under new boss Mauricio Pochettino. But there is no denying Depay would have been an excellent addition to his squad.
Now it is simply a case of what might have been, and the Holland star took to Twitter on Saturday to reveal just how pleased he was to have agreed a new deal.
"Game on!" he wrote. "Happy with my renewed contract and looking forward to a great season."
So expect the rumours to desist at last. But as for next summer? Well, who knows?
How much of a blow do you think it is for Spurs to miss out on Depay?
