VIDEO: Liverpool loanee scores the first goal of new La Liga season

Malaga Stadium

Luis Alberto scored the winner for Malaga against Athletic Bilbao, in an astonishing game of football.

Last summer Liverpool signed talented Spaniard Luis Alberto for £6.8 million.

The Sevilla forward had impressed on a loan spell with Barcelona B the previous season and Brendan Rodgers decided he was worth the gamble so stumped up the cash for this talented, but reasonably unknown playmaker.

But if you had to be honest, things did not go according to plan for Alberto.

He struggled to make his way into the Liverpool first team - playing just 135 minutes of Premier League football and 123 in the domestic cups.

But he has made an impact in one of the most entertaining and controversial opening games in La Liga history.

Malaga defeated Athletic Bilbao 1-0 in Andalucia this evening, with Alberto scoring after following up his original penalty miss. His strike was the first goal in the 2014-15 La Liga season.

Malaga ended the game with nine men after Duda and Antunes were sent off late on, while Athletic goalkeeper Gorka Iraizoz scored a stunning header in the final minute of the game to seemingly equalise, only for it to be disallowed for reasons only the referee knows.

Not a boring re-introduction to La Liga football then for Alberto, where he will hope to score plenty more goals this campaign.

Will Alberto prove himself in Spain?
