According to reports in Spain, Real Madrid star Angel di Maria is set to join Manchester United, a move he described as a dream five years ago.
Whilst plying his trade with Portuguese giants Benfica, the Argentine winger was linked with a move to Manchester City, who were then managed by Mark Hughes.
Despite the links, Di Maria always stated that it was his dream to join the Citizens' city-rivals United as he told the News of the World of his long-standing ambition to represent the club.
“Since I was 13 or 14 years old, I’ve been telling my mother and my father that my dream is to play some day for Manchester United," he was quoted as saying by FourFourTwo magazine back in November 2009.
“And I won’t stop till I get it. When I watch [Wayne] Rooney and all of them on TV, I can’t wait to play there at Old Trafford. When I was a little boy I watched Arsenal games as well, but Manchester United always dazzled me most.”
Five years on and it appears that his dream is about to come true.
The Argentine wizard has long been linked with a move away from Madrid after reports claimed that the club were unwilling to dramatically increase his reported wage of €3.5 million-a-year.
As a result, Di Maria’s entourage stated how the player feels undervalued in the Spanish capital and a switch to Paris Saint-Germain was said to be on the cards.
Unfortunately for the French champions, their battle with Financial Fair Play regulations ultimately dashed their attempts of making a deal happen, allowing the Red Devils to jump to the front of the queue.
Di Maria’s projected arrival is set to give United boss Louis van Gaal a huge boost in quality as the Dutch tactician searches for players who can adapt to his philosophy and style of play.
Favouring a 3-5-2 formation which relies on quick counterattacks, the set-up is perfect for Di Maria to showcase his talents and prove to a number of Premier League doubters that his 17 La Liga assists last season were no fluke.
The proposed deal is likely to break United’s record transfer fee as La Liga expert Guillem Balague claimed that the deal is set to top the €60 million mark (click here to read more).
