Manchester United outcast Nani misses penalty on debut for new club

Nani missed a penalty for Sporting Lisbon on his second debut yesterday.

Manchester United are said to be on the verge of agreeing a move for Angel Di Maria for a club and potentially British record fee. Louis van Gaal has already admitted his admiration for the Real Madrid star this summer, as he admitted the club do not have good enough wide-options.

One of the players he must have been referring to was probably Nani. The Portuguese international has left the club on loan for the season. He has left United to join former club Sporting Lisbon on loan for the season as part of the deal that brought Marcos Rojo to the club - and United are even supplementing his wages to the handsome fee of £4.8 million. That's right, United have paid to get rid of him. Clearly Van Gaal was not a fan.

Sporting fans however were exultant with the return of a prodigal son, and they swarmed around the player upon his return to the Jose Alvalade last week.

Last night he was named straight into the starting line-up for his second debut with Leoes. But it is fair to say that the night did not exactly go to plan for the player.

He managed to miss a penalty, get booked and was then subbed off in the 77th minute - interestingly his new squad number at the club.

Sporting Lisbon went on to win the game thanks to a 90th minute strike from Carlos Mane.

Can Nani come back from this setback?
