Manchester United are on the brink of completing a British record transfer for Real Madrid winger Angel Di Maria. The superb Argentine is expected to join the club for a fee in the region of £56 million and take the number 7 shirt at Old Trafford. It comes after reports suggesting a former number 7 in Cristiano Ronaldo has talked him into the move.
Louis van Gaal is said to be a massive fan of the player, and even admitted his admiration for him earlier in the summer.
For Real it is an odd decision to let him go, based on purely footballing reasons that is. The club need to balance the books to fall in line with FFP regulations after big signings like Toni Kroos and James Rodriguez this summer.
But he was the club's man of the match in the Champions League final last term and is consistently one of their better players, especially in the big games, so letting him go is a risky choice. Interestingly, when he earned the MOTM award in the final back in May he was presented the award by none other than Manchester United legend Sir Ale Ferguson. Wonder if he had a little word in the ear...
