Chelsea Under-21 star undergoes medical ahead of £1m permanent exit

Reports today suggest that Chelsea midfielder George Saville has travelled to Wolverhampton Wanderers ahead of a medical there.

Chelsea may have snapped up the likes of Filipe Luis, Cesc Fabregas, Diego Costa and Didier Drogba, but Jose Mourinho has been busy shipping players out this summer too. The likes of David Luiz, Ashley Cole, Ryan Bertrand, Patrick van Aanholt, Frank Lampard, Samuel Eto'o, Demba Ba and Romelu Lukaku have all left the club, bringing in almost £90m in transfer fees.

Whilst most of those are ageing players who are past their best - see Cole, Lampard and Eto'o - the next Chelsea sale concerns a young player who has been with the club since he was 11.

Midfielder George Saville joined the club from Reading back in 2004 upon Brendan Rodgers' arrival as head youth coach at Stamford Bridge, and turned professional in 2010 having impressed through the ranks in West London. After more fine displays in the Chelsea youth and reserve teams, Saville penned a new three-and-a-half year contract in January 2012, and was tipped to make an impact at the club in years to come.

However, that hasn't happened. Chelsea's bid for global supremacy has seen academy graduates struggle to break into their star studded line-up, and Saville was one of the players affected by this. A loan move to Millwall in February 2013 was supposed to hand him valuable experience, but the 21-year-old featured just three times for the Lions before being sent back to Chelsea.

Last season was Saville's most impressive to date, as he played a key role for Brentford during a loan spell at Griffin Park, playing 44 games for the Bees as Mark Warburton guided them to promotion from League One to the Championship.

Chelsea's signing of Fabregas once again meant that Saville would struggle to break into the first team, and moves back to Brenford or Wigan - managed by former Brentford boss Uwe Rosler - were speculated, but it's their Championship rivals Wolves who look to have struck a deal.

A £1m fee has reportedly been agreed between the two sides, with Saville travelling up to Molineux today to complete a medical and agree personal terms ahead of a permanent exit from Stamford Bridge.

Will Chelsea live to rue selling Saville?
