German media say Bayern are 'stalling' on offer for United target

Bayern Munich are seemingly not interested in paying AS Roma's valuation for Mehdi Benatia, giving Manchester United hope…

Bayern Munich refuse to pay €30 million for coveted centre back Mehdi Benatia, according to Kicker.

Coveted defender Benatia rose to prominence with Roma last season as he returned 70 tackles, 92 interceptions and 211 clearances whilst only giving away 58 fouls from 33 Serie A outings. However, his ball-playing ability was also underlined by an 88.7% passing accuracy from an average of 49 passes per game.

Chelsea, Manchester United and Bayern Munich have all been linked with the Morocco international but, amid Jose Mourinho's spending this summer, Chelsea seemingly cooled their interest leaving the race for Benatia being contested by two horses.

Bayern, though, could also pull out as they may fail to jump a €30 million hurdle.

"The transfer fee remains the major problem in the negotiations," Kicker said in a report published earlier today. "Bayern refuse to pay €30 million. The Romans [want full amount for their] man who still has a contract until 2018, orderly checkout."

Manchester United, meanwhile, are looking to conclude their own piece of massive transfer business this week as Angel di Maria could imminently transfer from Real Madrid to Old Trafford in a £63.9 million deal.

The acquisition of di Maria would represent a strong buy for Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal, however, there remain glaring problems at the back and if the Dutchman persists with a three-man centre back partnership then reinforcements could be a mandatory requirement.

Van Gaal would struggle to find a superior option than Benatia, who is seemingly available on the transfer market and could be bought for what amounts to £23.9 million in British money - far less than what Sir Alex Ferguson paid for Rio Ferdinand over a dozen years ago.

Should Manchester United pay AS Roma what they want for a player as proven as Mehdi Benatia?
