It's baffling - Arsenal legend on Manchester United's Di Maria deal

Ian Wright not impressed with Manchester United's incoming signing of Angel di Maria.

Manchester United are closing on a deal to sign Angel di Maria for a reported club record fee.

The winger is set to clinch a move over the next 48 hours, in what will give the Red Devils a big lift after a poor start to the season.

With just one point from a possible six against Swansea City and Sunderland, not everybody is convinced Di Maria will solve their problems.

Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright is one, telling BBC 5 Live's 606:

"I find it baffling that Louis van Gaal, a man of his experience in the game, is buying a player who is a forward when they definitely need defenders and midfielders.

Asked if he could simply not sign the players he wants, Wright responded: "If you are spending £63 million or whatever it is for him and your going to a club and say this is what I'm willing to pay, people will listen.

"They have the money to spend that on one player, (and Di Maria) I don't think United need right this minute, he's not a priority."

Wright makes a point which man United fans themselves are posing, with Di Maria seen as an expensive luxury.

It will only be possible to judge his signing after the transfer window closes, for if United manage to sign Arturo Vidal for example, Di Maria's addition will look more sensible.

United cannot, as Wright points out, claim the players they want to sign are not available, for even if their first choices like Mats Hummels are not, they have the funds to spend on top class alternatives.

Louis van Gaal is an experienced manager and he surely will not set himself up to fail by not signing another midfielder and defender over the next week.

What do you think of Wright's comments on United's squad and Di Maria?
