Liverpool signing: I followed Chelsea and Blues legend my idol

Zola

Liverpool signing Lazar Markovic has revealed his admiration for Chelsea.

Many were surprised to see Liverpool new boy Lazar Markovic make his big switch from Benfica, unchallenged from Chelsea.

The Blues were linked with signing him while he was at Partizan Belgrade, and rumours had it that the playmaker remained a target for the club.

Given the wealth of attacking options already at Chelsea, it's likely they just couldn't justify spending £20 million on the Serbian, but their loss could be Liverpool's gain.

Markovic is expected to make his debut for Liverpool on Monday night when the Reds take on Manchester City.

And the 20-year-old has revealed that it was actually Chelsea who he admired the most as a youngster, modelling his game on one of their greatest ever players.

He told The Sun: "I followed Chelsea because I liked Gianfranco Zola.

"But Liverpool are one of the best clubs in the world."

Zola is held in high regard at Chelsea for his sensational performances for the club in the late 90s, and won plaudits for his technique, guile, and unpredictability.

If Markovic can go onto become as loved at Liverpool as the Italian is at Stamford Bridge, then the following seasons should be exciting to watch, and judging from his one and only season at Benfica, he has the ability to go on and emulate his idol.

Can Markovic go onto emulate Zola?
