Manchester United and Liverpool are signing two of the fastest 10 players at the World Cup

Cole and Balotelli England Italy

Manchester United and Liverpool are both adding pace to their attacks by signing Angel di Maria and Mario Balotelli.

There is no trait in modern football which puts the fear into defenders like pace, and Manchester United and Liverpool are about to add some to their sides.

The impending additions of Angel di Maria to United and Mario Balotelli to Liverpool are blockbuster signings which show off the attraction of the league.

Both stars have speed in abundance, and featured in the official top 10 list of fastest players at the 2014 World Cup, according to FIFA.

Both registered top speeds of 33 kilometres per hour exactly, just shot of Costa Rica's Junior Diaz, the fastest player at the tournament, recording 33.8 k/ph. Here is the official top 10:

Junior Diaz, Costa Rica (33.8), Serge Aurier, Ivory Coast (33.5), Alvaro Pereira, Uruguay (33.1), Gonzalo Higuain, Argentina (33.1), Darijo Srna, Croatia (33.0), Angel di Maria, Argentina (33.0), Mario Balotelli, Italy (33.0), Ron Vlaar, Holland (33.0), Fabian Johnson, USA (33.0), Shkodran Mustafi, Germany (32.9).

United's side looked desperately short of pace in their draw with Sunderland, and Di Maria's natural ability will help the Red Devils add a little more unpredictability into their attack.

That is a trait Mario Balotelli possesses in abundance, and his speed is certainly an oft overlooked aspect of his game.

The Italian possesses all the traits a top striker needs to be successful in England, as so often discussed, it will be the mental aspect of him putting it all together which derives whether he can make the best of his talent.

Di Maria or Balotelli? Who will have the bigger impact?
