Whether he ever plays for Manchester United again or not is questionable, but while at Sporting Lisbon on loan, Nani remains contracted to the club.
As part of the recent agreement to sign Marcos Rojo, the Red Devils are still paying his wages, with Sporting the beneficiaries.
He endured a disappointing debut for the Lions on Saturday, substituted off after missing a penalty against Arouca, before they went onto snatch a 1-0 win.
The scorer of the winner was Portugal under-21 star Carlos Mane, who last season was linked with a switch to Manchester United, reported by The Mail among others, who dubbed him the 'New Ronaldo'.
After the game he spoke of his delight at playing alongside Sporting Lisbon's prodigal son, Nani.
He was quoted by MaisFutebol: "Nani is a great player, was brought back in the best shape and it is very good for me to be around him.
"He is an idol for me since childhood and it is a dream to play alongside him."
Nani's opening performance, which included a booking, showed off his frustrating traits, but the winger is certainly capable of re-capturing his best form back at his old side.
It will be interesting to see if youngster Mane continues to leave him in the shade, and if he continues to attract interest from United, fans will hope Nani has positive words of encouragement to pass on.
