Manchester City sent out a statement to the rest of the Premier League after beating Liverpool 3-1 at the Etihad Stadium.
The match, between last season's top two teams, was expected to be a close encounter, but two goals from Stevan Jovetic and one from Sergio Aguero provided City with the three points.
Rickie Lambert did score his first goal for the Reds in the closing stages, but it was too little too late for Brendan Rodgers's side as they slipped to a disappointing defeat.
Much of the build-up to the game had been dominated by the news that Mario Balotelli had signed for Liverpool - completing a £16 million switch from AC Milan - but he was powerless to help his new teammates as he watched on with fellow new recruit Adam Lallana.
The Reds, on this evidence, will need the 24-year-old to hit the ground running, as they were well off the pace in attacking situations.
There wasn't as much between the two sides as the scoreline suggests in generally play, but City's greater attacking edge provided them with victory.
It is the first major result of the Premier League season, with Liverpool left looking someway off the reigning champions and knowing they will need to improve if they want to reclaim their top four spot.
Below are some of the best photos from the match.
