97% pass accuracy, 74 touches: City star shines in 3-1 win

Man City Etihad

Manchester City's attacking players stole the headlines against Liverpool, but an unsung hero shone throughout.

Manchester City went about their summer transfer business relatively quietly, but there is absolutely no doubt they have been among the canniest when it comes to improving their squad.

Rather than making big-money signings for the sake of it, Manuel Pellegini identified the areas in which his side needed strengthening and bought players who were a marked improvement on what he already had.

Fernando is the perfect example: a midfielder who quietly goes about his business, a silent star in a team full of them.

Against Manchester City, it was Stevan Jovetic and Sergio Aguero who made the majority of the headlines, scoring the three goals that put Liverpool to the sword.

But for all the forwards' gusto, City would not have been able to perform anywhere near their best had it not been for Fernando, whose pass accuracy of 96.83% was outstanding, and whose 74 touches of the ball were rarely wasted.

The former FC Porto player also made two effective clearances, won two tackles and made one interception.

In short, he did what he was signed to do, hinting that City could have bagged a bargain.

Fernando has stepped into the City side as if he has been playing there for years, which proves - as much as anything else - the benefit of completing your summer business early.

This year Pellegrini can sit back and watch the craziness of transfer deadline day knowing he has done his work in good time.

And in Fernando, he could be in possession of one of the signings of the summer.

What have you thought of Fernando's performances for City so far?
