How did Real Madrid’s Sami Khedira fare against Cordoba?

Sami Khedira

Arsenal target Sami Khedira made a substitute appearance for Real Madrid against Cordoba in La Liga on Monday.

Sami Khedira has been linked with a move to Arsenal throughout the summer, but nothing concrete has materialised yet.

The Germany international was a key player for Real Madrid until last season when he suffered a long-term injury, and following the summer arrivals of Toni Kroos and James Rodriguez, he is now more or less just a squad player.

The 27-year-old, who joined Los Blancos from Stuttgart in the summer of 2010, has one more year left on his current contract and has been the subject of reported interest from the Gunners.

Although Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti has publicly said that Khedira will not leave the club this month, an offer of £24 million could be enough to prise away the German from the 2014 Champions League winner.

Nevertheless, Khedira featured in Madrid’s opening game of the 2014-15 La Liga campaign on Monday, coming on in place of Karim Benzema in the 75th minute against Cordoba at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The Arsenal target has not played too many minutes for Madrid in pre-season leading up to the match on Monday, but he did not look rusty or short of sharpness against one of the main candidates to suffer relegation from the Spanish top flight.

Khedira initially went to the right side of midfield amid mixed reception from the Madrid fans and played further up on the pitch in his opening minutes.

The 2014 World Cup winner’s German compatriot Toni Kroos was playing centrally, but as the match progressed, Khedira took up a more central position and was always looking to move forward.

Overall, it was a calm, composed and intelligent performance from one of the most underrated (maybe under-appreciated?) players in the world football.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger recently rejected reports that he wants to sign Khedira, but if the Frenchman is keen on recruiting a specialist defensive midfielder and is willing to cough up the cash to do so, then the Madrid star should be his man.

Have Arsenal left it too late to make a move for Sami Khedira?
