German newspaper Die Welt has suggested it wouldn’t be a surprise if Lukas Podolski returned to the Bundesliga.
The German has been linked with a move to Wolfsburg, as Arsene Wenger considers whether to let the forward and wide man leave the club before the transfer window slams shut next week.
“It would certainly make sense. The Wolves currently have only one really suitable striker Bas Dost behind the proven class of Ivica Olic,” reports Die Welt.
Alexis Sanchez’s arrival at Arsenal has seemingly pushed Podolski further down the pecking order.
He’s been unable to get a chance in the Gunners first team due to having extra time off after the World Cup and subsequently taking longer to reach a decent match fitness level in training.
What could prevent an Arsenal exit is the recent injury to Olivier Giroud.
Giroud suffered an ankle problem, which could keep him out of action for the next three months.
Rather than panic in the transfer market, Wenger could fall back on Podolski who works hard and is consistent when he’s drafted into the first team for big games whether that’s in the Premier League or the Champions League.
He’s always maintained a positive relationship with all Bundesliga fans and remains a popular character in Germany so a return isn’t out of the question.
We’ll know more by what Arsene Wenger does over the next few days leading up to the close of the transfer window.
With the massive Champions League play-off clash against Besiktas tomorrow night, it’s unlikely Wenger will take his focus off of that game and onto transfers until at least Thursday.
If he moves for a forward, it could be a sign that Podolski will definitely be on his way but if there’s a lack of any real concrete action from Arsenal in the market as far as forwards are concerned, the German can look forward to another chance.
He’s then got to make the most of it.
Do you think Podolski will leave Arsenal before next week?
