Manchester United are still searching for a first Premier League win of the season but there have been some exciting developments on the transfer market.
United are thought to be close to closing out a deal for Real Madrid midfielder Angel Di Maria, which is reportedly going to be worth in the region of £60 million.
The arrival of the Argentine will provide a much needed boost for United ahead of the close of the transfer window next week.
Not only will Di Maria give Louis van Gaal extra squad options, it also sends out a big message to United’s rivals in similar fashion to when Mesut Ozil signed for Arsenal late in the transfer window last summer.
It’s a little unclear exactly where Di Maria will play in van Gaal’s 3-5-2 formation but the Dutchman has several options.
Di Maria is certainly good enough to play narrower where he can make the most of his talents in terms of controlling possession and the variety of passes he’s capable of executing.
However, LvG arguably needs to find a way to get him playing out wide because his pace will be lethal for Manchester United on the counter attack and exploiting pockets of space.
Di Maria can destroy full-backs when he runs at them at full speed, putting them on the back foot and making it difficult for them to react.
The transfer is also another example of the wealth United have available to them and the pressure LvG will be under to hit the top four by the end of this current season.
He’s already admitted that this United team will take several months to adjust to the way he likes to play football but there can be little doubt that the arrival of Di Maria is a definite step in the right direction.
Here’s what United fans are making of the big money deal on Twitter.
Price tags on players only matter if they flop, United is getting one of the best players in the world #DiMaria— David Amoyal (@DavidAmoyal) August 25, 2014
Di Maria is great signing, but Woodward can't sit there thinking his business is done! Needs to get at least another 2 top players in— Everything Man Utd (@everything_utd) August 25, 2014
di Maria's a great, great signing for United. £59.7m is a bit too much though.— Abhinav (@_AK93) August 25, 2014
Signing Di Maria would be great. But think we need to sign God to make top 4 this season - with this squad.— Hansen (@storeha) August 24, 2014
Di Maria is perfect player for LVG. Can play a number of positions and will inject huge amount of pace. Nowhere near as strange as people— Toby Cockayne (@toby_brc) August 26, 2014
1. #MUFC could change to 4-3-3, if LVG gets the players he needs to fit that system. Di Maria would then play on either flanks.— Ringu (@MUFCRINGU) August 26, 2014
Feel more confident with #DiMaria, both him and his manager are crucially versatile. LvG not tied to 3-4-1-2 and ADM is not *just* a winger.— Iain Beddow (@iainbeddow) August 26, 2014
Just hope people don't think Di Maria is the answer to all our problems. LVG said it would take time.— Charley Farley (@jonmikesav8) August 25, 2014
I think its the last time we are going to see Fletcher and Cleverly starting together. #DiMariaMUFC— ReUnited (@FootyLuver) August 24, 2014
How do you think Di Maria will help Manchester United?
