Manchester United youngster wants regular first-team spot

Michael Keane says that he wants to show that he is ready to start for Manchester United.

Michael Keane is aiming to stake his claim for a regular spot in the Manchester United first team, after being handed his Premier League debut at the weekend.

The young centre-back has had to make do with Capital One Cup appearances during his career so far, but was called into action in England’s top flight on Sunday.

It wasn’t the happiest league debut for him, though, as the side slumped to a 1-1 draw at the Stadium of Light, but the appearance has left Keane wanting more.

He is likely to be included in the side’s match tonight against MK Dons in the League Cup, and he is hoping to impress manager Louis Van Gaal so that he can keep his spot.

“United want to win every game in every competition and, if I get a chance and do really well, you never know, I might get thrown in for the next game in the Premier League,” he said to the club's official site.

"The manager has shown he's not scared of playing young players and that is what I'm trying to do if I get picked.

"The manager is really experienced, really positive and precise with what he wants from everybody. There is no doubting what he is after. He is straight with you and you couldn't ask any more."

United go into tonight’s match against their League One opponents determined to avoid an upset and will need Keane to show his ability in the heart of their defence if they are to do so.

The 21-year-old has had plenty of Football League experience – after loan spells at Blackburn Rovers, Derby County and Leicester City – so will know what to expect from the Red Devils' clash with The Dons.

Keane has already clearly impressed the new Dutch boss and was singled out for credit on the club’s tour of America over pre-season.

He will now be hoping to prove that he can continue this form back in England, and tonight presents a good opportunity for him to do just that.

If he does impress, then Keane’s next chance in the Premier League may come against Burnley, who United take on this weekend.
