Liverpool’s defeat to Manchester City will be the talking point for plenty of fans heading in offices across the country today as the Premier League champions looked in great form against one of their main rivals last night.
Manchester United are also closing in on the high profile capture of Angel Di Maria, which again allows United to flex their financial muscles as Louis van Gaal looks for his first win.
We’ve decided to take a look back at the stories grabbing the headlines on this day last year.
‘Mystery second bid for Gareth Bale’
The Daily Mail ran a report which suggested Tottenham Hotspur had received a mystery second bid for attacking star Gareth Bale.
The first came from the side Bale eventually joined, Real Madrid, with Manchester United rumoured to be trying to hijack the deal.
Ex-United boss David Moyes refused to comment on Bale directly, simply stating that United would always be interested in the best players.
‘Mourinho sets Rooney deadline’
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho told Wayne Rooney to go public with his desire to join Chelsea.
He never did and he stayed at United, eventually signing a new contract when David Moyes was still in charge of the club.
‘Deal-fixer arrives at Arsenal’
Richard Law, Arsenal’s chief negotiator, arrived at the club’s training complex in Colney ahead of the final week of the transfer window.
Law was tasked with taking control of the club’s transfer negotiations as Arsene Wenger looked to improve his side before the end of the window.
He did a great job as Arsenal managed to add Mesut Ozil to their squad before the summer window slammed shut.
