Fenerbahce midfielder Raul Meireles was clearly delighted to add another trophy to his collection, after his side defeated bitter rivals Galatasaray 3-2 on penalties to claim the Turkish Super Cup.
Former Liverpool and Chelsea midfielder Raul Meireles has been posting his celebrations on Twitter, after his Fenerbahce side beat arch rivals Galatasaray 3-2 on penalties to win the Turkish Super Cup.
In an ill-tempered game between the domestic league and cup champions, a 0-0 stalemate over 120 minutes took the match to a shootout, with Fener prevailing thanks to successful spot kicks from fellow ex-Reds man Dirk Kuyt, Meireles himself and Michal Kadlec.
The Portuguese international has proved an important piece of the side’s lineup since arriving from Chelsea in September 2012 for £8 million, making 57 appearances over the past two campaigns, while winning the Turkish Cup in 2013 and the Super Liga title in 2014.
Having claimed both the FA Cup and Champions League during his final season at Stamford Bridge, Meireles is well-accustomed to winning silverware, with his time at FC Porto also producing four Primeira Liga titles, four Portuguese Cups and three Portuguese Supercups.
Moving on to Liverpool from the Iberian powerhouse in the summer of 2010, his lone season at Anfield failed to produce a trophy, but the 31-year-old’s impressive form did see him crowned the PFA Fans’ Player of the Year, before his £12 million switch to the Blues in August 2011.
With that in mind, it’s somewhat disappointing to see Meireles did not go on to experience a more successful spell in England, but his time in Istanbul is at least proving fruitful thus far.
Did both Liverpool and Chelsea sell Meireles too soon?
