Arsenal are reportedly going to miss out on the chance to sign Kostas Manolas from Olympiakos but fear not Gunners, the club appears to be working on two alternative deals.
Goal.com has suggested that the North Londoners are keen to add defensive depth to their squad before the close of the transfer window next week with West Ham’s Winston Reid and Manchester City’s Matija Nastasic reportedly at the heart of negotiations.
“Goal understands that the Londoners have made contact with the representatives of West Ham's Winston Reid and they are also considering Manchester City's Matija Nastasic,” reports Goal.
West Ham’s Reid is primarily a centre-back that he does have experience of providing cover at full-back.
Any deal for Nastasic could be a tremendous capture considering the promise and talent the 21-year-old has shown during his time at Manchester City.
Arsene Wenger deserves praise for the transfer of Calum Chambers from Southampton, who has been playing at centre-back, but there has been pressure on the Frenchman to sign a player more familiar with that role following the departure of Thomas Vermaelen.
Arsenal have plenty of time left to do the deals though the club isn’t expected to move on any transfer business until after the game against Besiktas tomorrow night.
The result of the Champions League play-off could alter Wenger’s transfer priorities but Goal suggests that a defender is a priority for the Frenchman.
Per Mertesacker’s return will also ease the pressure on Chambers playing in the heart of the back four and also provides much needed experience in Arsenal’s backline, which is important for huge games over the course of the campaign.
Reid appears to be the priority as the report suggests the club have already been in touch with his people but Nastasic would be a top quality signing if a move for the Hammers defender isn’t possible.
