Report - Arsenal were keen on Welbeck before Giroud injury

The Daily Mail has suggested Arsenal were keen on signing Danny Welbeck before Olivier Giroud got injured.

The Daily Mail has suggested that Arsenal were considering a swoop for Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck before Olivier Giroud got injured in the game at Everton.

When Giroud went down following a heavy blow to the ankle, Arsene Wenger’s heart would have been in his mouth but it appears the boss was already considering a way to make his attack stronger this season.

“Sportsmail understands the Gunners were keen on Welbeck prior to Giroud's injury, but fears over the Frenchman has seen their interest intensify,” reports the Mail.

Arsene Wenger confirmed yesterday that the club will know more about Giroud’s injury at some point today but either way, Welbeck would be a good signing for a number of reasons.

Firstly, he wouldn’t intrude on the way Wenger likes to use Giroud in his current system.

Welbeck is used to playing off of a central striker, commonly just to the left, which would allow Wenger to continue using Giroud through the middle when he’s fit and available.

Welbeck is also capable of stepping up centrally and frequently rotates with other Manchester United players in that position.

The report in the Mail also suggests that the early groundwork of a deal could already have been done unless Arsenal didn’t move on their apparent interest.

That’s significant considering the stage of the transfer window we’re currently at with just a few days left for clubs to do business before the next window this winter.

Arsenal showed last summer they are capable of pulling off big, high profile deals late as Mesut Ozil arrived on deadline day and with a striker and a holding player likely to be priorities for Wenger, things could again go down to the wire this summer.

Whether Wenger will be as keen to sign Welbeck following a disappointing performance in United’s League Cup exit to the MK Dons remains to be seen.

Is Welbeck the man Arsenal need to add to their attack?
