After a solid start to the season, Aston Villa were brought back down to earth on Wednesday night with a 1-0 home defeat to League One’s Leyton Orient in their second-round Capital One Cup tie.
Paul Lambert made seven changes to the team who recorded a 0-0 draw against Newcastle United on the weekend, including handing summer signing Joe Cole his full debut, but the Premier League side failed to finish their chances over the 90 minutes.
With Romain Vincelot’s 87th minute header proving the winner, Orient join Bradford City in humiliating Villa in this competition, with the Bantams famously defeating their opponents over a two-legged semi-final in 2013.
The match was a rude awakening for supporters, who had been filled with optimism following two commendable results from their opening two Premier League games, with a fierce reaction descending on Villa Park upon the final whistle.
A couple behind the dugout even had to be restrained after venting their frustration towards Lambert, while echoes of boos and calls to resign also greeted the Scot as he walked down the touchline towards the tunnel.
Fans on Twitter were understandably just as upset about the defeat and, as the following reactions show, what little good will was left for the manager has clearly all but gone.
No shots on target against Newcastle, ONE shot on target against Orient. Absolutely pitiful #avfc— Paul Abdale (@PaulAbdale) August 27, 2014
So that half-decent start to the season has come to a juddering halt. #avfc— Steve Bloomfield (@BloomfieldSJ) August 27, 2014
More worryingly, that’s four out of five cup runs under a Lambert that have ended with defeats to lower league sides-3 of then at home #AVFC— Jamye (@JamieCutteridge) August 27, 2014
Enough is enough Lambert out!— Steven Baker (@StevenSbaker285) August 27, 2014
Lambert Out. Clueless. Pathetic. #AVFC— Duncan Kemp (@hunkiedunkie) August 27, 2014
Thing is, it's not *just* the League Cup. It's the League Cup AGAIN. That's the problem.— Aston Villa Review (@VillaReview) August 27, 2014

I find it extraordinary that Lambert never seems to be described as being under pressure at #avfc. A catalogue of awful cup results now.— Kevin Hatchard (@kevinhatchard) August 27, 2014
That's it.... Lambert needs to go! Making all the wrong decisions! @AVFCOfficial— Hannah Best (@Best1232) August 27, 2014
Is Paul Lambert's time at Aston Villa up?
