'He is in my plans' - Pochettino hints at rotational role for Spurs winger

Andros Townsend

Mauricio Pochettino has confirmed his desire to keep Andros Townsend at Tottenham Hotspur, but the winger could be used as an impact player.

Mauricio Pochettino has hinted that Andros Townsend remains part of his plans for the coming season, but he could be set for a rotational role.

Townsend has been linked with a move away from White Hart Lane for much of the summer – with Southampton having two offers for the wideman rejected – but it seems he will now stay.

Pochettino, in his press conference today, stated that he was hoping to keep Townsend, but did hint that he could be utilised as back-up rather than a regular starting role.

“He [Townsend] is in my plans,” Pochettino side. “It is impossible you play or have only 11 players in the squad - you need 24 or 25 players.

“We have to play a lot of games and it is possible you play today, then don’t play in the next Premier League game, but the most important thing is understanding that we need to choose for the games.

“It is only 11 in each game - after that another three impact players come in. We have an unbelievable squad and my job is not only to put my philosophy in the club or on the pitch on how we need to play, but I need a choice and that is my job.”

The Argetine manager has made an encouraging start to life at Spurs, but Townsend will know that his route into the team is a tough one.

A number of players appear resurgent under the new boss and Pochettino has already taken a shining to the likes of Nacer Chadli and Erik Lamela, who will compete with the England international for spaces.

Lamela and Chadli both impressed during Spurs’s first home game of the season – a 4-0 thrashing of QPR – and the starting berths are now theirs to lose.

Towsend, as a result, may find his chances limited this season after bursting onto the scene last year.

The winger was a bright spot in what was a disappointing campaign for Tottenham, but it seems he has slipped down the pecking order over the summer – with an injury hampering his ability to impress his new manager.

Should Townsend have been sold this summer?
