Di Maria needs to hit the ground running or United's troubles will get worse

Angel Di Maria Argentina

Manchester United have broken the English transfer record in order to bring in Angel Di Maria, and he needs to have an immediate impact for various reasons.

Anticipation has a habit to set you up for disappointment, and the anticipation surrounding Angel Di Maria's arrival at Old Trafford had been building up for weeks. Louis Van Gaal finally has his man and after the appalling display at MK Dons on Tuesday night, Di Maria cannot be afforded any time to bed in.

There's no point in buying shiny new wheels for you car when you haven't got an engine. It is clear the problem at the club lies with their weaknesses in defence and the centre of midfield and Di Maria wasn't exactly a necessity. They already have world class attackers, although his pace will be welcome down the wing. However he's not going to be the one to cut out careless errors in defence and right now he doesn't fit into the current formation Van Gaal is using.

The Argentinian has played as part of a midfield three before but he isn't the sort of midfielder United need in the middle of the park. He will be most effective on the wing, but not as a wing-back, and it is unlikely Van Gaal will be changing his preferred methods already.

Manchester United's start to the season has been less than satisfactory and the fans aren't happy and you can't blame them. The club has standards which should be met regardless of the situation and right now it is rather embarrassing for them. Fans of other clubs are revelling in their misery and the younger United supporters aren't used to this feeling at all.

They will be expecting a change right away and all eyes will be on Di Maria. He will be expected to make an immediate impact and turn around the club's fortunes. If they endure another dismal display against Burnley, then there will be even more pressure to invest in the side before the deadline slams shut on Monday night. Defensive reinforcements are a priority regardless of the match against Burnley, but another poor effort could lead to the club making panic buys.

The class of '92 were a prime example of putting faith in the youth and it paid off, however the class of 2014 don't look like they are worthy of a place in the first-team as things stand and Van Gaal can't rely on them. With the marquee signing of Di Maria in place, Van Gaal has just five days to adjust the furniture around the centre-piece.

Fans are usually able to give a new player time to adjust to a new league, and a new country, but Di Maria doesn't have that time in a struggling team and with a huge price tag hanging over him. A great start and the United faithful may be able to see light at the end of the tunnel.

Over to you Angel.
