With money being thrown about all over the place this summer, Liverpool have managed to pull of a remarkable transfer.
There aren't many players on the planet that have that extra special something, a certain 'Je ne sais quoi', the ability to turn the game on its head in an instant. Unsurprisingly those players usually cost a huge amount of money if they ever become available, but they are usually tied down to a club. However Liverpool managed to secure Mario Balotelli for just £16 million.
Mario Balotelli has immense talent and we can all see that. He isn't quite at the same level as Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Luis Suarez because he doesn't put in those kind of performances on a regular basis. Obviously he is a temperamental character as well and this erratic displays on and off the pitch must be toned down.
Mario will understand that he is at an important stage of his career now, despite being only 24, he is already at his fifth club (although he did move on from his first club Lumezzane aged just 15). He needs to settle down, establish himself in the team and start performing at the highest level consistently.
Liverpool had their fair share of troubles with Luis Suarez and will be hoping Balotelli can stay away from any problems. If he does then Brendan Rodgers will have a superb player available to him, and one that can give them a great chance of winning the Premier League.
England found out the hard way this summer just how instinctive, and devastating Balotelli can be, and in his time at AC Milan he scored 26 in 43 Serie A games.
£16 million for a striker capable of scoring 20 goals in the league is a bargain. Manchester United have just paid £60 million to land Angel Di Maria, a player who wasn't even considered a key player in the Real Madrid side. A good player all the same, but that is a prime example of overpaying for someone.
Liverpool have pulled off a bargain, and discounting wonderful signings on free transfers (Robert Lewandowski, Andrea Pirlo, Sol Campbell) it has to be considered as one of the most impressive transfers in recent times.
Only time will tell how quickly Balotelli can pay back his relatively modest transfer fee, but one would think he can make a huge impact this season.
Who is the best value for money transfer ever?
